The Formula
How LinkedIn engagement rate is calculated
Impressions-based formula
(Reactions + Comments + Reposts) / Impressions x 100
LinkedIn measures engagement against impressions, not followers or reach. LinkedIn surfaces this number directly inside post analytics, which makes the math straightforward. Reactions count any of the six reaction types (Like, Celebrate, Support, Love, Insightful, Funny) and weight them equally in the formula.
Some agencies add document clicks (for PDF carousels) or link clicks to the numerator. Stick with reactions + comments + reposts unless you specifically want to track click-through on link posts. The 3.4% Hootsuite 2025 benchmark uses this exact formula.

| Industry | Avg engagement rate |
|---|---|
| Cross-industry average | 3.4% |
| Construction / Mining / Manufacturing | 4.0% |
| Dining / Hospitality / Tourism | 3.9% |
| Education / Nonprofit | 3.5% to 3.8% |

Personal LinkedIn accounts run 1% to 2% higher than company pages on the same content theme. The algorithm rewards person-to-person reach.
Quality bands
How to read your LinkedIn engagement rate
Low
< 1%
Below the industry floor. Check whether external links in the post body are suppressing reach.
Average
1% to 3%
Below cross-industry average. Carousels (PDF documents) and tighter hooks typically lift this band fast.
Strong
3% to 5%
Around Hootsuite's 3.4% cross-industry average. Content theme is clear and the algorithm is serving it well.
Excellent
> 5%
Top quartile. Your audience is engaged enough to comment and repost, which compounds reach on the next post.
Earn the engagement. Skip the writer's block.
BrandBrain learns your LinkedIn voice, drafts hook-first posts and PDF carousels in your style, schedules to your calendar, and publishes directly via OAuth. Reactions and comments compound when the cadence is consistent.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What is a good engagement rate on LinkedIn?
Hootsuite's January 2025 Social Media Benchmark Report found LinkedIn's overall average engagement rate is 3.4%, with industry ranges between 2.0% and 4.0%. Construction/Mining/Manufacturing topped the chart at 4.0%, with Dining/Hospitality/Tourism close behind at 3.9%. Anything between 1% and 3% is roughly average, 3% to 5% is strong, and above 5% is excellent for personal accounts. Company pages typically run 1% to 2% lower than personal accounts on the same content theme because LinkedIn's algorithm favors person-to-person reach over brand pages.
How do you calculate LinkedIn engagement rate?
Add up reactions, comments, and reposts on a post, divide by post impressions, then multiply by 100. So a post with 50 reactions, 10 comments, and 5 reposts on 3,000 impressions is (65 / 3,000) x 100 = 2.17% engagement rate. LinkedIn surfaces impressions in your post analytics directly, which makes the math simpler than on Instagram where the denominator (followers vs reach) is a choice. Always use impressions as the denominator on LinkedIn.
What counts as engagement on LinkedIn?
Five signals: reactions (Like, Celebrate, Support, Love, Insightful, Funny — all weighted the same in the engagement formula), comments, reposts (with and without thought), shares to private messages, and clicks (for posts with links or documents). The standard formula uses reactions + comments + reposts divided by impressions. Some agencies add clicks for posts with documents or carousels. Stick to the simpler formula unless you specifically want to track click-through behavior on link posts.
Should LinkedIn engagement be based on impressions or followers?
Impressions. LinkedIn does not show your posts to all your followers because the algorithm decides who sees what based on early engagement signals from the first 30-60 minutes. Using follower count as the denominator gives a misleadingly low number because most followers never see most posts. Impressions answers the right question: of the people who saw this post, what percentage engaged? That number is comparable across posts and accounts.
What is the average LinkedIn engagement rate for small accounts under 5K followers?
Small LinkedIn accounts often see higher engagement rates than large ones for two reasons: (1) the people who follow you do so because they have a specific reason (industry, role, content theme) and that targeting compounds engagement; (2) LinkedIn's algorithm gives early-stage accounts a higher relative push because comments and reposts compound faster on smaller audiences. Accounts under 5,000 followers typically run 4% to 8% per post when content is consistently theme-focused.
Why did my LinkedIn engagement rate drop?
Common reasons LinkedIn engagement drops: (1) outbound links in the post body because LinkedIn caps reach on posts with external links, so move links to the first comment; (2) inconsistent posting cadence because gaps of more than a week cool the algorithm's relationship with your account; (3) content theme drift because when posts span unrelated topics, the algorithm cannot identify the right audience to serve them to; (4) a recent post tanked, which lowers the algorithm's confidence on the next few posts. The 30-day rolling engagement rate is more useful than per-post for diagnosing.
How can I improve my LinkedIn engagement rate?
Three highest-leverage moves on LinkedIn: (1) hook with a specific number or counter-intuitive claim in line 1, because LinkedIn truncates after 2-3 lines and the click-to-expand decision is made instantly; (2) post a comment of your own within 10 minutes of publishing to trigger the algorithm's early-engagement signal; (3) put external links in the first comment, not the post body, because LinkedIn down-weights posts with link previews. Carousels (PDF documents) outperform plain text by 1.5-2x on average.
Are LinkedIn personal accounts more engaging than company pages?
Yes, consistently. LinkedIn's algorithm prioritizes person-to-person content. A company page post typically reaches 5% to 10% of followers organically, while a personal account post reaches 15% to 30% of followers. The engagement rate gap is even larger because personal accounts also see higher per-impression engagement (people interact more with humans than logos). The most effective company strategy: have founders, executives, and key employees post personally and have the company page repost.
