What is a
topical map?

A topical map is a structured plan of every topic, subtopic and question a website must cover to build topical authority on a subject. It groups related search queries into content clusters around pillar pages, so search engines — and AI assistants — can recognize the site as comprehensively covering the topic.

The difference between a topical map and a keyword list is structure. A keyword list tells you what people search; a topical map tells you what to build: which pillar pages anchor each cluster, which supporting articles feed them, which entities each page must mention, and which order to write them in. Google's ranking systems evaluate coverage at the entity level — its Knowledge Graph holds 54B+ entities — which is why modern topical maps start from entities, not keywords.

How it works

From one keyword to the whole territory

01

Query discovery

Autocomplete, People Also Ask and related searches, mined for the questions your audience actually asks. 30+ conversational queries per seed.

02

Entity extraction

50+ entities from Google's Knowledge Graph — the people, brands, products and techniques Google checks your coverage against.

03

Intent clustering

Queries and entities grouped into content hubs by co-occurrence and intent, each tagged TOFU, MOFU or BOFU.

04

Briefs, BOFU first

Every cluster becomes an AI-ready brief — conversational H2s, a 40-60 word snippet block, entities to mention — ordered by what sells.

BOFU-first prioritization

Write what sells.
Then write the rest.

Most content plans start with easy informational posts that earn traffic and zero revenue. Every Topiq cluster and brief is tagged by funnel stage and ordered so bottom-of-funnel pages — the comparisons and best-of guides that convert — get written first.

BOFUconverts — written first
MOFUcompares — written second
TOFUeducates — written last

10× higher conversion vs TOFU-led plans

Topical maps vs keyword clustering tools

A keyword clustering tool groups keywords that share SERP results — useful, but it stops at "which keywords belong on one page". A topical map adds the three layers that decide rankings: entities (is your coverage complete in Google's eyes?), intent sequencing (pillars and supporting clusters), and priority (which article earns revenue first). Topiq runs the clustering step too — you get both, from one seed keyword.

Why topical authority decides who ranks

Topical authority is how comprehensively a site covers a subject, as judged by the entities and questions it addresses. Sites with strong topical authority rank for more keywords with fewer backlinks, because search engines treat them as subject experts. It is also what AI assistants look for when choosing which sources to cite.

You can't build it by publishing randomly — you build it by closing coverage gaps in a deliberate order. That's the map's job: every cluster is a gap, every brief is a move, and the BOFU-first ordering means the moves that earn revenue come before the ones that only earn traffic.

7×

more likely to trigger AI Overviews

Conversational queries of 8+ words — the kind Topiq mines 30+ of per map — are ~7× more likely to appear in AI answers.

Topical map questions, answered

What is a topical map?

A topical map is a structured plan of every topic, subtopic and question a website must cover to build topical authority on a subject. It groups related search queries into content clusters around pillar pages, so search engines and AI assistants recognize the site as comprehensively covering the topic.

How do I create a topical map?

Start from one seed keyword. Gather real queries from autocomplete, People Also Ask and related searches, extract the entities Google's Knowledge Graph associates with the topic, group queries into clusters by intent, then assign each cluster a pillar page and supporting articles. Topiq automates all of these steps in about 5 minutes.

What is the difference between a topical map and keyword clustering?

Keyword clustering groups keywords by similarity — usually shared SERP results. A topical map goes further: it organizes clusters around entities and search intent, sequences them into pillar pages and supporting content, and prioritizes by conversion potential. Clustering is one input; the topical map is the full content strategy.

What is topical authority and why does it matter?

Topical authority is a measure of how comprehensively a site covers a subject. Sites with strong topical authority rank for more keywords with fewer backlinks, because search engines trust them as subject experts. Covering a complete topical map is the most reliable way to build it.

How many articles does a topical map produce?

A Topiq map ships 15 AI-ready content briefs per seed keyword, each tagged TOFU, MOFU or BOFU and sorted so the highest-converting articles get written first. Most niches need 30-100 articles for full coverage; you can generate additional maps for adjacent subtopics as you expand.

Does a topical map help with AI search and AI Overviews?

Yes. AI search engines cite content that directly answers conversational questions. Topiq pulls 30+ real user questions per topic — queries of 8+ words are about 7x more likely to trigger AI Overviews — and every brief includes a 40-60 word extractable answer block formatted for citation.
